Opening Concert of Beijing Modern Music Festival 2014

On May 16, 2014, the Opening Concert of Beijing Modern Music Festival (BMMF) was successfully held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. The concert was approved and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and was sponsored by Central Conservatory of Music. On the initiative of Xiaogang Ye, Artistic Director of BMMF 2014 and Vice President of Central Conservatory of Music, and Music Director Yongyan Hu, BMMF 2014 will continue to keep its academic nature and forward looking and closely integrate art and social development to spread the spirit of modern music in a way most acceptable to the general public. The opening concert showed rich and colorful music forms centering on diversity, audibility, national character, emotionality and symbolic character of modern music.


1. Ear-pleasure of modern music


Simhavaktra Dakini composed by Professor Jin Ping at Central Conservatory of Music featured reflection on ear-pleasure and practicability. The composition was concise and delicate, but expressed rich audiovisual effects.


2. National character of modern music


Palaran: Poems of Love and War composed by Jack Body featured neat theme instruments of complicated rhythm, accompanied by sounds of solo and flute. Singer Budi Surasa Putra led audience to melodies of Indian “Raga” and Arabian “wooden Kamm”.


3. Emotionality of modern music


Let Fly (for violin and orchestra) by Bright Sheng leveraged floating violin tone and music motivation to express a father’s deep affection for his daughter and then expounded emotional expression of love for family, friends, teachers, work and society.


4. Symbolic character of modern music


Shattered Night, Shivering Stars by Canadian composer Alexina Louie, with modern techniques of different tones, themed at local cultural image. Landscapes – Inside, Outside by Germany composer Martin Herchenroeder symbolized contradictory “inner world” and “outer world” of human being by mixing tangling sounds.


People have different appreciation and acceptance levels due to their differences in cultural environment, traditional culture, production and life. Equality of music diversity allows people to have different opinions on explanations of musical text and make comments on music from different perspectives. The diversity of musical fidelity will influence the future direction of art development, and delicate and profound new modern music 2014 will lead the fashion in a new era.
