Barlow Endowment

Now in its 31st year of operations, the Barlow Endowment of Music Composition at Brigham Young University enjoys a worldwide reputation as one of the premier sources of funding for composers who create new music.  With the help of a generous gift from Milton & Gloria Barlow in 1981, the Endowment has awarded over $2,000,000 to 250 composers from 40 countries around the globe.  Each commission awarded is part of a unique partnership between the Endowment, the composer and a performance ensemble that has committed to premiere the new work.  Partnering ensembles have included the Minnesota and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras, the American Composers Orchestra, the BBC Singers, Empire Brass, and the Latvian Radio Choir, to name only a few.

Composers have written new works for choirs, orchestras, bands, string quartets, and other chamber ensembles and soloists. The wide variety of ensembles who have partnered with the Endowment represents a broad spectrum of the diverse sounds and styles of contemporary music.
